Frequently Asked Questions
Are you covered by my insurance provider?
Likely! I don’t offer direct billing for most services (although I can for Alberta Blue Cross and Greenshield), but most insurance providers cover at least a portion of services offered by Registered Provisional Psychologists. I encourage you to reach out to your benefit provider before we start. Some questions you can ask:
Does my health insurance plan include mental health benefits?
Do I have a deductible? If so, what is it and have I met it yet?
Does my plan limit how many sessions per calendar year I can have? If so, what is the limit?
Do I need written approval from my primary care physician in order for services to be covered?
What are your rates?
I charge $220 for 60 minute sessions and $330 for 90 minute sessions. I do not charge GST.
I get that these fees can be a challenge for some. If you are struggling to make ends meet or are not covered by benefits, send me an email at Megan@JustAsYouAreCounselling.com, and we can talk about the possibility of lower cost counselling.
What is the cancellation policy?
We have a 48 business hour cancellation policy. This means that if you have an appointment on Monday at 1 pm, you need to cancel by 1 pm on the Thursday before. If you cancel after the 48 business hours (Mon - Fri), payment for the session will be processed in full. You will get a receipt but note that most benefit providers won’t cover missed sessions. If you have questions about why, definitely ask!
How do I pay?
Credit card or E-transfer. I offer direct billing for Bluecross and Greenshield. I will require your insurance information before our first session. Cash is not accepted.
Once we set up an initial session, I will ask you to add your credit card to my booking system (a working credit card on file is required). Let me know if you’d prefer to send an e-transfer prior to our session starting. I send you a receipt after we’ve completed our session and payment has been processed, and you can send that off to your insurance provider.
What does an individual first session look like?
Starting therapy can be nerve wracking (whether you've been to therapy before or this is your first time!). If we're meeting in person, consider arriving a few minutes early so you can sit in our comfy waiting room and grab a sparkling water or coffee. I'll meet you there and walk with you to the office. Next, we'll go through the official and necessary business of consent and confidentiality. Finally, you can share more about why you are seeking counselling, and I will collect a little more about your history and current experience. You set the pace and get to ask questions, too. We are collaborators!
What should I bring?
While there’s nothing specific you have to bring, consider bringing a sweater if it’s cool in the room. Also, some folk find it helpful to bring a book to record any major insights they have or any strategies they want to practice between sessions.
Who do you work with?
Any person that is 18 or older and lives, works and plays in Alberta.
What does it mean to be a Registered Provisional Psychologist?
After years in graduate school to earn my masters degree in counselling psychology (along with 800+ clinical hours of training), I am undergoing supervised training to further refine my skills. I work with two fully registered psychologists to ensure I’m providing the best care.
